Palatal Expanders
A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance used to widen the upper jaw (maxilla) by gradually applying gentle pressure to the bones of the palate. It creates more space in the mouth and helps improve jaw alignment and bite relationships.
Common uses:
- Correct crossbites
- Treat crowding or create space for teeth
- Improve narrow upper jaws
- Help with some airway and breathing issues
- Prepare for orthodontic treatment before braces or aligners
- Assist with impacted teeth eruption
Common types:
- Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) – tooth-supported expander with a central screw
- MARPE (Mini-implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expander) – uses mini implants for skeletal support
- Hyrax expander – common metal screw design
- Quad Helix – spring-style expansion appliance
The appliance is activated gradually (often with a small key) to slowly widen the palate over time.
